Frequently Asked Questions

What is an E-Book (download)?

An E-Book (download) is a file that is sent to you over the Internet. The files can contain any type of computer program or information, in the case of Smith's Taxation this is tax information. The file is stored on your computer and hence the information can be accessed quickly without the need to go on-line.

The Smith's Taxation E-Books (downloads) are password protected and when you make a purchase of a Smith's Taxation product the appropriate password is e-mailed to you after payment has been made.

The Smith's Taxation E-Books (downloads) are published in the popular Adobe Portable Document File format often referred to as PDF format. In order to view a PDF file a Reader program is required to be installed on your computer.

The majority of computers have a reader installed - it is frequently installed on newly purchased computers to provide user information. In the unlikely event that you do not have a PDF reader on your computer the correct version for your computer may be downloaded from Adobe, at no cost, by clicking on the following link:
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2_allversions.html.

How does the on-line order process work?

Smith's Taxation products may be purchased on-line directly from this site or via offer e-mails sent to tax professionals on a regular basis. The process is the same for both routes.

When you click on the purchase button you will be taken to a page asking you to select the type of licence you require, Single or Multiple. The selection of the correct licence for your practice/company is an important issue and more information can be viewed in the FAQ - "Which licence should I purchase?"

Once you have selected the licence you require you will be directed to the order form. There is no need to fill in details of the product you are purchasing as this is done automatically. For your information the product description, licence type and price are displayed at the top of the order form. At this point you may change the type of licence you are purchasing.

The order form requests details of your address and telephone number. It should be stressed that this is requested to enable us to issue a receipt and contact you should there be a problem with your order. The information you give us is confidential to Smith's Taxation and we do NOT share it with any third party.

The last section of the order form requests you to enter your e-mail address. This is requested twice as this is the address to which your password will be sent. You can only send the form if both entries are identical.

When the order form is completed click the "Submit Order" button. This will encrypt and send your order to our secure credit/debit card payment system operated by PayPoint.net.

It will request you to enter your card details, all data is encrypted via https: standards. When you have entered your details click once on the "Authorise" button and wait until your screen is updated. This can some times take a few minutes - do not press the "Authorise" button twice. We cannot view the details of your card - these are held on the secure PayPoint.net site.

Increasingly card issuing companies are providing additional security for on-line purchases and you may be directed to authorise your purchase via the 3D secure system. If you have not previously registered your card with 3D you may also be directed through the 3D registration process.

When you receive a screen advising you that your payment has been successfully authorised the purchase of your password is complete.

Shortly after you have completed the purchase process a confirmation e-mail will be sent to you containing the password and a highlighted link to the relevant E-Book (download) file, also included is a VAT receipt of the purchase.

Click on the highlighted link (if it is not highlighted see FAQ - "Nothing happens when I click on the link in the confirmation e-mail"). This will bring up a file download box, click on the "Run" button and follow the instructions on screen. A "Save" button can also be seen click here for further details. During the process you will be prompted to enter in "lower case" the password sent to you.

Once the installation process is complete you will have a Smith's Taxation category on your program list and an individual entry for the product. There will also be a start icon for the product installed on your desktop.

Which licence should I purchase?

Our aim has been to provide a simple, and transparent method for pricing and licensing our tax software products to fellow professionals.

As a matter of trust we do not currently ask for verification of status at the point of purchase of licences. The intentional purchase of the wrong licence for your organisation would be a breach of this trust. Continued abuse will lead to us to consider making reports to any appropriate professional body.

If you realise that you have purchased, in error, the wrong level of licence you may 'very simply', without any embarrassment, upgrade your licence on-line by buying another 'single' licence (multiple licences are merely double that of a 'single' licence). Our systems will automatically update your licence status to the correct level.

Should you have any questions as to the appropriate level of licence to your particular situation please contact us via our Contact Page.

The two level licensing system allows easy recognition of the licence type required. This is as follows:

A SINGLE LICENCE is defined as a licence for a Sole Practitioner or Single Director Company. The E-Books (downloads) may be used on any computer or server operated at the site purchasing the licence. A Single licence is priced at half that of a Multiple licence.

A MULTIPLE LICENCE is defined as a licence for a Partnership/Company of 2 or more Partners/Directors. The E-Books (downloads) may be used on any computer or server operated at the site purchasing the licence. A Multiple licence is priced at only double that of a Single licence.

Each geographical office site location must have its own licence.

Should you have any questions as to the appropriate level of licence to your particular situation please contact us via our Contact Page. As should all educational establishments, charities, & local/national government departments.

Licence covers what period?

The licences for electronic data products (e-books) supplied by Smith's Taxation are valid for the life of the product and relate only to the specific edition purchased. Licences do not include the cost of any updates.

Owing to the changing nature of tax information and its dependency on prevailing law and government policy we publish new editions of our products at appropriate intervals.

The e-book product does not stop working when a subsequent updated edition becomes available. It may continue to be used, but over time it will become increasingly out of date.

On occasions changes in government policy and prevailing law are not predictable. In these circumstances, and solely at our discretion, we have published an updated edition of the product concerned and distributed it free of charge to those purchasers affected.

On what operating systems can Smith's Taxation E-Books (downloads) be installed?

Smith's Taxation E-Books (downloads) are designed to install and operate on computers using the Windows operating system. Currently new product releases are tested on Windows XP and Windows Vista.

Many installations of the products are made on earlier editions of Windows (Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows ME and Windows NT etc.) and we are not aware of any incompatibilities with these older operating systems. However, it should be noted that these older operating systems in most cases are not fully supported by Microsoft and we cannot guarantee the operation of Smith's Taxation products with them.

If you wish to use Smith's Taxation products on other operating systems than Windows please see the FAQ - I want to use an E-Book (download) product on Linux, Mac/ other operating system.

I have not received a e-mail after placing my order

Normally you should receive your confirmation e-mail of purchase within a few minutes of placing your order. The e-mail will contain details of the product you have purchased, costs allocated to your Credit/Debit Card, VAT receipt details, password, and a link to the E-Book (download) file.

Please note that this will only occur if the payment process was successful. You are informed at the end of the ordering process whether or not your payment was successful. If you had been informed that the payment was unsuccessful then you will not receive a confirmation e-mail.

You can try again with the same card, use another card, or make payment by alternative means. - see FAQ: How do I place an order by post or fax?

To receive the confirmation e-mail it is important that the details have been accurately entered. The order form forces the e-mail to be entered twice and both entries to agree. It is possible that an incorrect e-mail address has been entered twice in which case you will not receive your confirmation e-mail of purchase.

If after an hour of placing your order you have not received the confirmation of purchase e-mail please e-mail us using the contact box on the following link: http://www.smithstaxation.co.uk/contact.html.

Please provide your e-mail address, name, product ordered, a contact telephone number and an approximate time of order placement.

Nothing happens when I click on the link in the confirmation e-mail

This is normally caused by the computer you are using having "Hyperlinking" configured as "Off".

The simplest way to resolve the problem is to copy the link using the option under the Edit Menu. Highlight the link in the e-mail text (hold down mouse right hand button and run cursor over link text to be highlighted) and then press "Copy" in the Edit Menu, a typical link example is as follows: http://www.smithstaxation.co.uk/abcoftax_08.exe. Make certain when you highlight and copy the text that you start at http ... and end at ... exe - do not copy any other text either side of the link text.

Open your Web browser and clear the address box placing the flashing cursor at the left hand side of the box. Click the right hand button on your mouse (can depend on configuration) and click on "Paste" This should place the link in the address box, press return and you should then see the relevant E-Book (download) box appear on the screen. Click on "Run" and follow the instructions on screen.

I want to install an E-Book (download) on a computer that has no Internet connection

Using a computer with an Internet connection click on the link in the Confirmation of Purchase e-mail. This will connect to the E-Book (download) file box. Click on "Save". This will make a copy of the E-Book (download) file on to the computer - you will be prompted as to where on the computer the copy is to be made - note the location folder. Copy the file (typical example of file name; abcoftax_08.exe) from the folder to which you downloaded it to a transfer medium, this could typically be a memory stick or CD-R. Place the medium in the non-Internet computer and navigate to the location of the file. Click on the file, click on "Run" and follow the on screen instructions, you will need details of your password from the Confirmation of Order e-mail.

Once installed on my computer do I have to enter a password each time?

You only need to input the password of a Smith's Taxation E-Book (download) once at the time of the installation. Subsequently when you click your computer's Desktop icon the product should automatically open.

If you are prompted to input your product password every time you click your Desktop icon your computer has placed the icon of the self-extracting installation file onto your computer's Desktop. Some Internet browsers by default operate in this manner when files are downloaded.

It is likely that the product has installed correctly but requires a Desktop icon to be created. Check as follows:

1)Click "Start" - button at lower left hand side of Desktop
2)Click "All programs"
3)Find entry for "Smith's Taxation" programs - you will see all the Smith's Taxation products you have installed.
4)Select the product for which you would like to create a Desktop icon and click the right hand side button of your mouse - select and left click "Create shortcut", drag the newly created shortcut to your computer's Desktop.

Whenever you click on this Desktop icon the product will open without the need to input the password.

If you still require technical assistance please call 01474 871541.
